India's first-ever direct commercial container freight train arrived in Nepal

India’s first-ever direct commercial container freight train arrived at the Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal on July 23, 2026, introducing seamless rail-based cross-border cargo transit between the two nations.

Highlights:

  •  The freight train ran directly from the Kolkata Port in West Bengal, India, to Biratnagar in Nepal.

  • It comprised 40 wagons transporting a massive consignment of 1,225 tonnes of canola grains.

  • The journey utilized the recently built Jogbani (Bihar) - Biratnagar (Nepal) broad-gauge rail link, which was built with financial grant assistance from India.

Strategic and Economic Impact

  • Previously, third-country rail cargo could only be received via the Birgunj customs point.
  • This launch eliminates time-consuming cargo unloading, checking, and reloading procedures at the border.

  • Shifting from road to this direct rail route cuts total logistics and transit costs by roughly 20% to 30%.
  • It also drastically reduces the transit time down to approximately 24 hours.

  • The landmark operation was made possible by operationalizing the Revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol, which was formally amended through a signed Letter of Exchange in November 2025.
